The Tata Sierra is one of those names that instantly sparks nostalgia among Indian car enthusiasts. Ever since Tata Motors confirmed the return of the iconic badge, anticipation has been steadily building. We’ve already seen the Sierra in concept and near-production forms, along with several teasers over the past few months. Now, Tata has dropped its clearest look yet at the upcoming Sierra. ev, giving us a better idea of what to expect from the electric SUV before its official launch.
At first glance, the Sierra.ev looks remarkably similar to the ICE-powered Sierra that has already been showcased. That is hardly a surprise. Tata appears to be taking the same approach seen on several of its recent models, where the electric and internal combustion versions share a common design language. However, look a little closer and there are enough changes to distinguish the EV from its petrol and diesel sibling.
The front end is where most of those differences can be spotted. The Sierra.ev features a full-width LED daytime running light signature that stretches across the nose, giving it a clean and futuristic appearance. Sitting in the centre is the Tata logo, integrated neatly into a body-coloured trim panel that spans the width of the vehicle. The main LED headlamps are positioned lower down within the bumper, while vertically stacked lighting elements occupy the outer edges.
There are also a few functional touches. We can see small aero-focused channels incorporated into the bumper design to help improve efficiency. A silver-finished skid plate effect on the lower bumper adds a touch of ruggedness and reinforces the SUV character.
Move to the side and the Sierra.ev retains the silhouette that made the original Sierra such a standout. New dual-tone alloy wheel designs help separate it from the ICE model, while all-wheel-drive variants are expected to carry QWD badging.
The rear design also remains largely unchanged. A connected lighting setup, clean surfacing and the familiar Sierra shape continue the retro-modern theme. The most obvious giveaway is the Sierra.ev badge on the tailgate.
Inside, Tata is expected to load the Sierra.ev with technology. Reports suggest the cabin could feature a three-screen layout consisting of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a central infotainment display and a dedicated passenger screen. It is a setup that would instantly make the Sierra one of the more tech-focused offerings in its segment.
Other expected features include dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, a powered tailgate, ventilated front seats and a premium audio system. Tata has been pushing hard on the technology front recently, so a feature-rich cabin feels almost guaranteed.
Safety is likely to be another strong point. The Sierra.ev is expected to offer six airbags, electronic stability control, Level 2 ADAS functions, hill-hold assist, front and rear parking sensors, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, ISOFIX child-seat mounts and disc brakes on all four wheels.
While Tata is yet to reveal official powertrain specifications, expectations are high. Multiple battery pack options are likely, with a claimed driving range of up to 500 kilometres. More importantly, the Sierra.ev is expected to offer a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup.
That could prove to be a significant advantage. The Indian EV market is becoming increasingly competitive, with rivals such as the Mahindra BE 6 attracting plenty of attention.
