Toyota’s showstopper from Auto Expo 2018, the 2018 Toyota Yaris, inches closer to reality as the company announces its prices, launch timeline, and the commencement of bookings. The mid-sized saloon is the first in its segment to offer seven airbags across all variants, among other premium features.
But before delving into all that, a look at the introductory price is mandatory. Because not only has Toyota managed to position it just in the middle of the Etios and Corolla Altis, the company has also made an offer the prospective buyer will find a bit difficult to refuse. At Rs 8.75 lakh onwards for the 6-speed manual gearbox version and Rs 9.95 onwards for the CVT-equipped (7-step automatic) variant, the Toyota Yaris is spread wide enough to compete with everything from the City to the Verna.
There are four trim levels, namely J, G, V, and VX. The fully loaded VX costs Rs 12.85 for the MT and Rs 14.07 for the AT. The CVT-equipped variant also comes with paddle shifters and there’s cruise control, too — regardless of the gearbox choice. There’s also Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, ABS, Stability Control, and disc brakes on all four wheels.
With the Corolla being the staple choice for everyone in the need of a premium saloon, it’s clear to see that the Yaris also tries to step in those shoes. The company claims the cabin is made quieter with an acoustic and vibration controlled windscreen, there’s roof-mounted AC vents and ambient lighting for rear passengers, and even a gesture-controlled infotainment system has been included in the features list. There are parking sensors both at the front and rear, and the driver seat is electrically adjustable, too.
Those looking for a diesel-powered car will be disappointed, since the Yaris will only be offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine (105 bhp). But on the bright side, having seen the kind of reliability and trouble-free ownership that it offers (in the Etios and the Etios Liva) and that you’re allowed to own petrol cars for longer in major cities, it makes quite a lot of sense. If all of this impresses you, you can make an advance booking at any of the authorised Toyota dealership against a deposit of Rs 50,000. The car will be launched next month, that is in May 2018.
