What is it?
Inspired by the popular 1965 diver’s watches, the iconic Japanese watchmaker Seiko has introduced a range of new Prospex models, featuring updates in terms of technology, design and construction, but with a distinct vintage style.
Why is it cool?
The Seiko Prospex 1965 Heritage Diver’s Special Edition watch maintains a retro look with a compact construction and bold dial markers, making it something that stands out. Powered by Seiko’s reliable automatic movement, it ensures accurate timekeeping, be it above or even below the surface of water. This means that the watch is water-resistant up to 300 metres and has a power reserve that extends to 72 hours. Now that is some heavy-duty stuff.
Its stylish yet rugged design makes it suitable for both diving and everyday wear, so it does more than just look good. The watch has distinct features that are used by divers, like the rotating bezel used to measure remaining oxygen levels during dives, as well as the three-fold adjustable clasp to lengthen the strap just enough to fit snugly on top of a wetsuit.
The special edition comes with an additional strap made entirely of recycled plastic bottles, using a traditional Japanese braiding technique called Seichu, familiar in Japanese culture for its use in fabric designs, resulting in a strong fastener that is resistant to the degradation caused by exposure to sunlight. Aside from that, the watch also features Lumibrite inserts, providing high legibility even in dark conditions.
This combination of history, craftsmanship, and functionality makes the Seiko Prospex 1965 Heritage Diver’s Special Edition a cool choice for watch enthusiasts and divers alike. We sure enjoyed using it for the period that we had it for review, and it has probably lit the spark for a new obsession — horology!
Is it expensive?
At Rs. 1.3 lakh, the Seiko Prospex 1965 Heritage Diver’s Special Edition watch is a bit of a pricey affair, but looking at the significance of the model, and the history behind it, not to mention how handsome of a watch it is, collectors and enthusiasts won’t mind splurging on it.
