The second-generation BMW X2 has just been showcased globally, and one look at it is probably enough to deem it unique. While the older X2 was closer to resembling the short-lived 1-Series, albeit slightly butch, the second-gen X2 now gets a coupe-SUV-like design, perhaps even looking like a smaller X4. The new X2 also features a fully-electric version for the first time, while the combustion variants receive two turbo-petrol and one diesel powertrain.

It’s important to note that the new BMW X2 now gets a wheelbase measuring 2692 mm, which is 22 mm longer than the outgoing car. It also gets wider tracks on both ends, and the height too has been bumped up to 1590 mm, which is 64 mm more than before. Alloy wheel sizes range between 17 inches to 21 inches, and this is the first time a compact BMW gets the latter.

BMW gives you the option of choosing among powertrains, the first being the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with a 48V mild-hybrid setup, putting out 167 bhp and 28.5 kgm of torque. This can be had in the sDrive20i trim. Next is the more powerful 2-litre turbo-petrol with 295 bhp and 40.7 kgm of torque, offered on the M35i xDrive. The diesel is a 2-litre unit with 147 bhp and 36.7 kgm of torque. Lastly, the fully-electric iX2, which gets an electric motor on both axles, and is backed by a 64.7 kWh battery pack with 449 km claimed range. In terms of power figures, the iX2 puts out 187 bhp and 25.1 kgm of torque. All the ICE powertrains come mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The interiors of the X2 are heavily inspired by the X1’s, with the blended display screen taking centre stage, running on BMW Operating System 9. There’s also a bunch of driver assistance features, such as steering and lane control assistant, active cruise control, exit warning, front collision warning, and parking assistant among others.

BMW has not confirmed any intentions to bring the X2 to India, but there might be a certain set of buyers who might be looking for a smaller, more affordable coupe from the Bavarian car maker. For now, we can only wait and see what the future unfolds.
