The Smart #2 has made its global debut at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, bringing back the brand’s iconic two-seater city car as an all-electric offering. Measuring just 2,746 mm long, it gets a rear-mounted electric motor producing 80 bhp and 130 Nm, a 35.8 kWh LFP battery and a claimed WLTP range of up to 290 km. It supports 65 kW DC fast charging, which can take the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 20 minutes. Smart will begin taking orders in Europe and China, with market-specific pricing and availability to be announced.
The #2 is essentially the spiritual successor to the Smart Fortwo, which was discontinued in 2024. And while the brand’s current line-up comprises larger cars, this one goes back to its roots with a tiny footprint designed for crowded streets and tight parking spaces. Its turning circle is just 6.95 metres, which should make manoeuvring through narrow lanes and squeezing into parking spots a breeze.
The design has been handled by Mercedes-Benz, and the #2 retains the original car’s familiar proportions, with short overhangs, wheels pushed towards the corners and a two-tone exterior. It also gets a modern take on the floating roof and signature lighting elements. The split tailgate returns, with the upper glass section opening independently and the lower section folding down to form a loading platform that can also be used as a seat when parked.
Underneath, the Smart #2 sits on a new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) platform developed specifically for the two-seater. The rear-mounted motor drives the rear wheels, while a floor-mounted battery helps keep the centre of gravity low. It also gets a five-link rear suspension setup, which Smart claims is a first in its class. The idea is to improve ride comfort and handling without compromising the car’s urban agility.
Inside, the compact cabin gets a continuous bench-style seating arrangement and an S-shaped cockpit designed to make the most of the available space. The focus is on keeping things simple and functional, while modern technology brings it up to date. Safety equipment includes the new ‘Tridion Cell Evo’ structure, which surrounds the passenger compartment, along with driver-assistance features such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality and Highway Assist.
The European range will comprise Pure, Pure+ and Premium trims, alongside a limited-run Couture Edition. Limited to 999 examples each in Europe and China, the latter gets an exclusive white-and-gold finish, gold detailing and 16-inch alloy wheels. Smart has yet to announce final prices, but the #2 is expected to occupy the more accessible end of its electric line-up.
