Most manufacturers wait until after a car’s global debut to start chasing lap records. Lamborghini, however, has decided to do things the other way around. Ahead of its official unveiling at Monterey Car Week later this month, the upcoming Revuelto SV has already etched its name into the record books by setting the fastest lap ever recorded by a production super sports car at Germany’s Hockenheimring.
With Lamborghini factory test driver Marco Mapelli behind the wheel, the camouflaged Revuelto SV lapped the Hockenheimring Grand Prix circuit in just 1 minute 41.6 seconds, comfortably eclipsing the previous benchmark set by its predecessor, the Aventador SVJ by 5.7 seconds.
That said, Lamborghini’s claim comes with an important distinction. The company calls the Revuelto SV the fastest ‘production super sports car’ around Hockenheim. The outright production car record at the circuit still belongs to the Mercedes-AMG One, which managed to lap the circuit in 1 minute 38.563 seconds. Lamborghini is arguing that the AMG One belongs in an entirely different league as a limited-production hypercar with Formula 1-derived tech, making the Revuelto SV’s achievement specific to the super sports car segment.
Although the covers are yet to come off completely, what we can tell by looking at the camo’d test mule is the fact that the Revuelto SV will have a more aggressive aerodynamic package, including a redesigned front bumper, larger side skirts, additional aerodynamic flicks, a prominent fixed rear wing and a heavily revised rear diffuser.
Technical specifications remain a closely guarded secret, but expect the familiar naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 plug-in hybrid powertrain to receive a healthy bump in output over the standard Revuelto’s already staggering 1001 bhp. We’re expecting a figure in the 1200 bhp range. Weight-saving measures, recalibrated suspension, stickier tyres and uprated brakes are also expected to play a significant role in the SV’s improved performance.
Lamborghini will officially reveal the Revuelto SV on August 14 at The Quail during Monterey Car Week, one of the biggest events on the automotive calendar. Whether it ultimately proves to be the ‘fastest Lamborghini ever’ remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear. The Revuelto SV is following the same recipe that made the Murcielago SV, Aventador SV and SVJ icons of Bologna — more power, less weight, more aerodynamic grip and an even greater focus on track times. Not to forget, much louder exhaust notes. Yum.
