Mercedes-AMG has expanded its new GT 4-Door Coupé family with a rather interesting entry-level model. Called the GT 53 4-Door Coupé, it combines a fully electric powertrain with the sort of performance, technology and theatricality that AMG buyers have come to expect, including something that may raise a few eyebrows: a simulated six-cylinder soundtrack designed to make you forget there is no combustion engine under the bonnet.

The new GT 53 produces up to 536 bhp and 800 Nm from its two electric motors, with one mounted on each axle. The electric motors provide fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, while a two-speed transmission on the rear axle is designed to balance punchy acceleration with efficiency at higher speeds. The result is a claimed 0 to 100 kph time of just 3.5 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 230 kph. Opt for the AMG Driver’s Package and that rises to 250 kph.

The numbers are impressive, but the battery technology underneath is arguably the more interesting bit. The GT 53 gets a 106 kWh usable battery operating on an 800-volt electrical architecture. Its cylindrical cells are directly cooled using electrically non-conductive oil, allowing AMG to maintain battery temperatures during sustained high-performance driving and rapid charging. And rapid is putting it mildly.

The GT 53 can accept up to 600 kW of DC charging power when connected to a suitable 800-volt charger. Mercedes-AMG claims that more than 534 km of WLTP range can be added in just ten minutes. A 10 to 80 per cent charge takes a claimed 11 minutes under the specified conditions. The car can also use 400-volt charging infrastructure, with the system automatically switching between the two voltage levels.

Overall WLTP range is claimed at between 682 and 809 km, depending on specification and conditions. That makes the GT 53 rather more than a point-and-shoot performance EV. Mercedes-AMG is pitching it as a proper Grand Tourer, one that can cross continents without turning every charging stop into an expedition.

Helping with that is an elaborate thermal management system. The Central Coolant Hub brings together pumps, sensors and valves into a single compact unit, allowing the car to direct cooling exactly where it is required. Under heavy loads and high ambient temperatures, the system can cool multiple components simultaneously, while under lighter conditions it can direct cooling capacity only towards components that actually need it.

Then there is the bit that will probably get the most attention.

Select the AMGFORCE Sport+ driving programme and the GT 53 attempts to recreate the experience of an AMG six-cylinder. The system introduces simulated gear changes, complete with noticeable traction interruptions, while reproducing the sound of the 3.0-litre inline-six from the former Mercedes-AMG E 53 Coupé. AMG’s acoustics specialists recorded the engine from 16 different microphone positions, carrying out more than 100 measurements on a rolling road to recreate its character.

In other words, Mercedes-AMG has gone to considerable lengths to make an electric car behave like it has a gearbox and an engine with pistons inside it.

Drivers can even change the simulated gears using the steering wheel paddles. There is also a dedicated driver display designed to reinforce the impression that you are sitting behind the wheel of a conventional high-performance AMG.

Underneath, the GT 53 uses AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with air springs and adaptive damping. Three damping settings, Comfort, Sport and Sport+, allow the car to switch between relaxed long-distance cruising and sharper responses when the road gets interesting. The six AMG DYNAMIC SELECT modes further alter the character of the car, with settings ranging from efficiency-focused Eco to the suitably theatrical AMGFORCE Sport+.

Aerodynamics have received plenty of attention too. The car comes with a standard active rear spoiler that continuously changes its angle depending on speed, acceleration and driving conditions. At higher speeds it can extend further to increase downforce and stability. An optional active rear diffuser works differently, extending the rear bodywork to improve airflow and reduce drag, particularly during high-speed motorway driving.

The GT 53’s long, low fastback silhouette is unmistakably AMG, with a deeply sculpted bonnet, steeply raked windscreen and pronounced rear diffuser. Despite housing a substantial battery beneath the floor, Mercedes-AMG says the new GT 4-Door Coupé could be designed 40 mm flatter than its predecessor.

Inside, the formula is part sports car, part luxury GT. A 14-inch central display is angled towards the driver, while the front seats offer substantial lateral support without sacrificing long-distance comfort. The rear gets individual seats, generous space and intelligently designed footwells. An optional panoramic SKY CONTROL glass roof stretches towards the rear window and can switch between transparent and non-transparent sections.

There is even a Sound Slider, allowing drivers to adjust the in-cabin soundtrack between Powerful, Balanced and Minimal, with a separate scale running from Classic to Futuristic.

For now, the GT 53 makes an interesting statement about where AMG sees performance heading. It is electric, brutally quick and technically sophisticated, yet it still wants to give you the noises, shifts and sensations that made AMG famous in the first place. Whether that is sacrilege or clever theatre probably depends on how attached you are to pistons. Either way, AMG clearly isn’t ready to let the drama disappear just because the engine has.
