The Jeep Wrangler has been around for decades, but its latest special edition goes right back to where the civilian Jeep story began. Meet the 2027 Wrangler JL-2A, a limited-edition Rubicon inspired by the 1945 Willys CJ-2A — the first Jeep designed specifically for civilian use after the war.
The CJ-2A was essentially the military Willys MB adapted for life away from the battlefield. It found work on farms, ranches and industrial sites, and introduced several features that would become closely associated with Jeep, including the seven-slot grille. More than 80 years later, Jeep has taken those early ideas and wrapped them around a modern Wrangler.
The JL-2A is based on the Wrangler Rubicon, so there is no shortage of off-road hardware underneath. It gets electronic locking differentials at both ends, an electronic front sway-bar disconnect and Jeep’s Rock-Trac HD four-wheel-drive system. .
The styling, meanwhile, is where the 1945 connection becomes obvious. The two-door JL-2A can be had in Gobi, a modern interpretation of the Harvest Tan shade offered on the original CJ-2A. The four-door gets the option of an olive green inspired by Jeep’s military heritage. Other colours include Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost and Joose. Then there are the wheels. The JL-2A gets 17-inch retro-style wheels finished in Joose, referencing the Sunset Red wheels available on the original CJ-2A. They are wrapped in chunky 33-inch BF Goodrich KO2 all-terrain tyres, while orange tow hooks at either end add another splash of colour. The grille gets dark metallic grey accents, and the body-coloured fender flares and three-piece hardtop keep the whole thing looking relatively cohesive.
Jeep has carried the theme into the cabin, too. The JL-2A gets a combination of Heritage Tan Nappa leather and Bison Brown trim, with Desert Orange contrast stitching. The shifter gets a Willys-Overland badge, while the HVAC vents feature graphics inspired by the original Jeep’s seven-slot grille and silhouette. There is also a rather nice little Easter egg on the rear swing gate. A commemorative plaque recreates artwork from the CJ-2A’s original dashboard data plate, complete with scenes depicting the Jeep’s agricultural and industrial uses.
Mechanically, there are zero changes to the Rubicon’s powertrain. In the US, the Wrangler Rubicon is offered with a 3.6-litre V6 producing 285 bhp and 353 Nm, or a 2-litre turbo-petrol making 268 bhp and 400 Nm. A six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic are available, although Jeep hasn’t confirmed which combinations will be offered on the JL-2A.
The JL-2A is the 11th release in Jeep’s Twelve 4 Twelve programme, which sees the company launch a different limited-edition Wrangler each month. It will be offered as a package on the 2027 Wrangler Rubicon, costing $4,995 (Rs 4.5 lakh in the USA) over the base vehicle. So, while the original CJ-2A was built to get work done, the JL-2A is more about celebrating the beginning of Jeep’s civilian story.
