In a landmark move for India’s automotive sector, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) announced that Tarun Garg has officially assumed the role of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2026. This appointment marks the first time an Indian national will lead the company in its 29-year history, succeeding Unsoo Kim, who returns to a global strategic role at Hyundai Motor Company in South Korea.
HMIL described the appointment as a significant milestone, reflecting the Hyundai Motor Group’s deep confidence in Indian leadership and the country’s crucial strategic importance in the global auto market. The decision, approved by the board in October 2025, is seen as a natural succession plan following Garg’s instrumental role as Chief Operating Officer.
An industry veteran with over three decades of experience, Garg has been pivotal to HMIL’s recent success. Under his operational leadership, the company achieved record sales for three consecutive years, posted record-breaking profits, and successfully executed India’s largest IPO in 2024. Jose Munoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, highlighted these accomplishments as key reasons for Garg’s elevation, calling it “a defining moment” in HMIL’s history.
Commenting on his new role, Garg stated, “India’s automotive industry is at an exciting inflexion point, driven by innovation, sustainability and evolving customer aspirations.” He outlined his vision to build on HMIL’s strong foundation by accelerating the company’s transformation towards sustainable growth, technological leadership, and superior customer experience.
This historic leadership change signals a new chapter for Hyundai in India, emphasising local expertise to navigate the market’s rapid evolution towards electric vehicles, connected technology, and heightened consumer expectations. Garg’s promotion is widely viewed as a strategic step to strengthen HMIL’s market leadership during this transformative period.
