What is it?
The Austra are a pair of urban-centric gloves from Reise Moto.
Is it any good?
One of the important aspects of an urban/everyday pair of gloves is comfort and the Austra ranks pretty high in this regard. The mesh panels on the upper part of the fingers and around the thumb area ensures there’s ample ventilation even when riding at speeds. And the perforated leather on the palms keeps sweating at bay. But does it come at the cost of protection? Not really.
These gloves not only have knuckle protection but also scaphoid sliders. Furthermore, the additional leather layer on the pinky finger acts as a safety net in case of a crash. There are TPU protectors on the f ingers, however, the glue has already started coming off — this is after four months of using them almost everyday for commuting, and touring, too.
In four months, they’ve faced scorching 43-degree heat, some brutal off-road patches, and more recently, the Mumbai rains. Aside from the glue issue, they’ve held up remarkably well. Another big win? They’re touchscreen friendly — no more yanking gloves off at traffic lights.
And come on, these look slick, too. While the yellow ones look the best, there are four other colours to choose from. The ‘Keep Rolling’ tag on the index finger is a nice touch… till it doesn’t fall off.
How much?
At Rs. 2999, these gloves don’t burn a hole in your pocket and tick all the right boxes that makes them great urban/everyday use gloves. While the glue coming off is concerning, this is something that we’ve experienced with another pair of gloves from an Indian brand that used similar construction, but was fixed in subsequent batches.
