Volvo India has launched the T8 Twin Engine variant of the XC90 SUV. The intelligent powertrain comprises a 2-litre turbo- and super-charged engine and an electric motor. Available only in the Excellence trim — which means it’s a luxurious four-seater and not a sever-seater like the regular version — the XC90 T8 goes on sale now, priced at Rs 1.25 crore, ex-showroom, Delhi.

The plug-in hybrid system allows you to charge the SUV directly from a compatible power socket, hence increasing the vehicle’s range. The electric-only range is rated at about 43km. Delve deeper into the tech aspect of the car and you’ll notice the electric motor drives the rear wheels while the engine takes care of powering the front runners.

Talking of which, the engine is a 2-litre forced induced unit which uses both turbo- and super-charging to offer a maximum output of 315hp and 400Nm. The motor offers an equivalent of 87hp and 240Nm. Add both and the XC90 successfully shows that you don’t need to burn a lot of fuel to achieve sportscar-like performance figures: at 402hp and 640Nm.

And to shut the naysayers down, here is the company-claimed 0-100 km/h time: 5.6s. And when you consider that the XC90 T8 is basically a four-seat executive lounge, that number looks even more impressive.

It also comes with Radar-equipped safety, which includes adaptive cruise control, collision warning with autonomous braking, and blind spot detection.

The company will also offer two charging stations along with the XC90 T8. These can charge the vehicle in 2.5 hours. It will be available in six colour choices, will get 20 Bowers & Wilkins speaker equipped infotainment system, four individual seats, and luxurious interior covered either in black or white. Heated/cooled bottle holder, laminated side windows, and an air cleaner round up the features.
