Pune-based Tork Motors has launched its new Kratos-R Urban e-motorcycle for Rs 1,67,499 (ex-showroom Pune). This is the new base variant of the Kratos-R that comes with limited features. The Kratos-R Urban comes with just the ‘City’ ride mode which restricts the top speed to 70kmph. However, since the Urban trim continues to use the same 4 kWh lithium-ion battery as the standard variant, the claimed range on the new model is 100 km.

Interestingly, all Urban trims will come loaded with features from the standard model for 30 days. That includes three ride modes and a reverse mode, fast charging, in-app navigation, and a bunch of smartphone-dependent features. Tork Motors is giving customers an option to unlock these features within six months of purchase for a fee of Rs 20,000. There are no changes to the hardware compared to the standard R variant. In fact, the additional Rs 20,000 you pay for unlocking the features on the Urban variant adds up to a total of Rs 1.87 lakh, which is the ex-showroom price of the Kratos-R in Pune.

The introduction of a more affordable variant doesn’t come as a surprise given that the FAME-II benefits have been reduced. This has led to a massive bump in the prices of electric two-wheelers. Hence, even the Ola S1 Air and the Ather 450S were introduced. So, to keep the costs in check and rope in new customers, such affordable variants seem to be the only way, for now.
