Ducati has unveiled the latest iteration of its 90-degree V-twin engine, set to power various models in 2025. This new powerplant features two configurations, enhancing its versatility with an 890 cc displacement that produces either 118 bhp or 113 bhp at 10,750 rpm, alongside a consistent torque of 9.54 kgm across both versions. At just 54.5 kg, it is the lightest twin Ducati has ever created, significantly lighter than previous models like the Superquadro 955 and Testastretta Evoluzione.

The engine’s 90° V design naturally balances first-order forces, minimising vibrations without a countershaft. The backward-angled cylinders, set at 20 degrees, optimise weight distribution. With a bore and stroke of 96 x 61.5 mm, it delivers impressive maximum power and a favourable torque curve, particularly suitable for road use. In its 120 hp version, adding a racing exhaust can boost power to 124 bhp and torque to 10 kgm. The 113 bhp variant includes a more robust alternator to handle heavier electrical loads, with reinforced connecting rods and flywheel, for improved response at high RPMs. Both versions feature shorter gear ratios for better hill starts.

Ducati’s new engine boasts an Intake Variable Timing (IVT) system that provides linear torque delivery, enhancing throttle response and performance. With over 70 per cent of maximum torque available at 3,000 rpm, it is claimed to maintain impressive torque levels throughout the RPM range.

The design includes advanced features like a water/oil heat exchanger for improved efficiency, a ride-by-wire system with four Power Modes, and a modern gearbox with Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) 2.0. This new V2 engine will eventually power models such as the DesertX and Multistrada, with initial presentations scheduled for the upcoming Ducati World Premiere on November 5, 2024.
