The Lamborghini Gallardo is one of those cars that needs very little introduction. It helped bring Lamborghini’s V10 supercar to a wider audience, and nearly three decades after its original design was penned, Fabrizio Giugiaro has returned to give it another go. The result is the Caven Atelier Hommage 26, a limited-run reimagining of the original Gallardo, with just 25 examples planned.

Unveiled at the Concours at Wynn Las Vegas, the Hommage 26 is the first project under Caven Atelier’s Designer Series, which brings the original designers of iconic cars back to their creations for a modern reinterpretation. Giugiaro, who designed the Gallardo at Italdesign in 1998, has revisited the supercar with fewer restrictions and access to materials and technology that weren’t practical back then. And while the silhouette remains unmistakably Gallardo, almost everything else has changed. Just five components have been carried over from the donor car: the roof, windscreen, side windows, door mirrors and their bases. The rest of the body is new, and largely made from carbonfibre.

The front end stays particularly faithful to Giugiaro’s original design, while the rear gets a more contemporary treatment. The highlights include pop-down headlights, redesigned tail-lamps, a new diffuser and active aerodynamic flaps above the rear lights. There’s also a redesigned engine cover and an opening rear window, which allows the V10’s soundtrack to make its way into the cabin. The interior gets redesigned seats and updated graphics, although Caven Atelier is yet to reveal the full details.

Underneath all that carbonfibre sits the original Gallardo’s naturally aspirated 5-litre V10, reworked by Italian engineering specialist Italtecnica. The engine now revs to 8500 rpm and is offered in two states of tune. The GT produces 540 bhp, while the more focused Performance version gets 560 bhp. Both are paired with a six-speed gated manual gearbox, which is rather refreshing in an era where supercars are increasingly moving towards automated transmissions. The mechanical upgrades extend beyond the engine, too. The Hommage 26 gets a new two-mode adjustable suspension with Comfort and Sport settings, upgraded brakes and bespoke 20-inch Italtecnica wheels. The idea isn’t to turn the Gallardo into an entirely different supercar, but to refine its original character while retaining the naturally aspirated V10 and manual gearbox that made it special in the first place. The Caven Atelier Hommage 26 will be built in a limited run of just 25 examples, each based on a first-generation Lamborghini Gallardo. Buyers can either supply their own donor car or have Caven Atelier source one for them. The conversion starts at Rs 6 crore, excluding taxes and the donor car, which means this isn’t exactly a budget-friendly way of revisiting the good old days. Still, the Gallardo is a rather fitting choice for the first project in Caven Atelier’s Designer Series. With Lamborghini’s current supercars moving towards turbocharged and electrified powertrains, the prospect of a naturally aspirated V10 paired with a manual gearbox has plenty of appeal. And with its original designer having another go at the car, the Hommage 26 is more than just a restomod. It’s a chance to see what one of Lamborghini’s most recognisable designs could have been, had its creator been given another three decades to work on it.
