Mahindra has made it something of a habit to unveil important new cars around Independence Day, and this year is no different. The big reveal is the new Scorpio Lifestyler, Mahindra’s production-bound global pick-up that will arrive in India by April 2027 with prices starting below Rs 20 lakh.

First shown as a concept in South Africa in 2023, the Global Pik Up has now taken its final form and will be called the Scorpio Lifestyler in India. Interestingly, international markets will simply get the Mahindra Lifestyler. The pick-up has been designed in Mumbai at Mahindra India Design Studio and developed at Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai. The idea is to sell it not just in India, but in markets such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

Mahindra hasn’t officially detailed the India-spec engines yet, but the Lifestyler is expected to borrow its powertrain options from the Scorpio-N. That means a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol, both expected to be offered with six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. The diesel should also get the option of four-wheel-drive, while the petrol is expected to remain rear-wheel drive. The engines are likely to receive revised outputs to suit the heavier pick-up.

Visually, the Lifestyler is much more than a Scorpio-N with its roof chopped off. It gets a long load bed, a more prominent front fascia with a larger grille and a chunkier skid plate, 18-inch wheels and a simple rear-end with Mahindra lettering on its tail gate. It retains plenty of the Scorpio family’s design cues, and Mahindra has also shown three different versions to demonstrate the breadth of the new pick-up.

The ‘Valley Edition’ is the more lifestyle-focused version, while the ‘Reef Edition’ and ‘Trail Edition’, have a more rugged appearance aimed at buyers who actually intend to take their pick-up off the beaten track.

While Mahindra hasn’t fully its interior yet, what’s confirmed is a large vertical touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a wireless phone charging pad, a new steering wheel and a slightly revised dash layout in comparison to the Scorpio-N. And that is perhaps the biggest change from Mahindra’s previous lifestyle pick-up, the Scorpio Getaway. The new Lifestyler isn’t being pitched simply as a vehicle for carrying things from A to B. Mahindra wants it to appeal to buyers who want something capable during the week and adventurous at the weekend.

For India, the Scorpio Lifestyler is expected to start below Rs 20 lakh — making it almost 50 per cent more affordable than the Toyota Hilux — with the launch scheduled by April 2027. If Mahindra gets the pricing and capability right, this could be an interesting new chapter for the Scorpio name. After all, India has had lifestyle SUVs for years. A proper Mahindra pick-up with Scorpio DNA could finally give buyers something a little different.
