Xiaomi, a name synonymous with smartphones and smart devices, has taken a bold leap into the high-performance electric vehicle arena. The Chinese tech giant’s first production EV, the Xiaomi SU7, has etched its name into the record books by becoming the fastest electric production car to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with an officially verified lap time of 7:04.957.

This record-breaking run cements the SU7’s performance credentials and showcases Xiaomi’s serious commitment to the EV space. The feat comes after Xiaomi previously stunned the automotive community when a pre-production SU7 prototype clocked an unofficial 6:46.874 at the Nürburgring in 2023. Now, with homologation and production specifications in place, Xiaomi’s lap time of 7:04.957 becomes the new benchmark for electric vehicles at the legendary “Green Hell.”

The lap was conducted under the watchful eyes of Nürburgring officials and follows standard protocols for timing and verification. While the SU7’s design evokes aerodynamic sleekness and modern minimalism, it’s what lies beneath that truly impresses. The EV is powered by a dual-motor setup delivering over 664 horsepower and more than 800 Nm of torque, enabling lightning-fast acceleration and remarkable cornering capabilities—both crucial on the Nordschleife’s 20.8 km of demanding twists and elevation changes.

What makes this achievement even more noteworthy is that the SU7 is not a stripped-down track special. Xiaomi intends it as a full-featured luxury EV sedan, designed to go up against competitors like the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan. That it can also dominate at one of the world’s most challenging racetracks adds a whole new layer of credibility to Xiaomi’s automotive ambitions.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has previously stated that the company aims to be one of the top five global automakers in the coming decade. With the SU7 already turning heads—and breaking records—it seems the tech giant is off to a flying start. Whether or not this success translates into mass-market acceptance remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Xiaomi is here to play hard in the EV game.
