Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its Model Y electric SUV, marking a historic moment for the country’s EV sector. The American automaker opened its first Indian showroom at Mumbai’s Maker Maxity Mall in BKC, ending years of speculation about its India debut.
Tesla India has introduced two variants of the Model Y, with the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) starting at ₹58.89 lakh and the Long Range RWD priced at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Customers can book their Model Y by paying a token amount of ₹22,220, followed by a ₹3 lakh payment within seven days to confirm their order.

The Model Y delivers an impressive 622 km range on a single charge according to Tesla’s claims. With access to Tesla’s proprietary Supercharger network, the SUV can regain 267km of range in just 15 minutes of fast charging. Performance-wise, the Model Y accelerates from 0-100kph in under 5.6 seconds, making it one of the quickest EVs in its segment.
Inside the cabin, the Model Y features Tesla’s signature minimalist design with a 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system that controls most vehicle functions. Rear passengers get their own 8-inch touchscreen for climate and media controls. Other notable features include Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance suite, wireless charging, powered front seats, and automatic climate control.
For its initial launch phase, Tesla will be importing the Model Y as Completely Built Units (CBUs). While the company has remained tight-lipped about local manufacturing plans, more showrooms are expected to open soon across major Indian cities, with Delhi likely being the next location.
The Model Y’s launch represents a significant milestone for India’s EV market, bringing Tesla’s latest EV technology to Indian consumers. Though the current pricing remains premium due to import duties, Tesla’s superior charging infrastructure and advanced features could attract early adopters looking for a premium electric driving experience.
