Tata Motors has boldly demonstrated the dual character of its recently launched Sierra SUV, with the model setting two impressive performance records at the NATRAX facility in Indore. Proving that it can deliver extreme efficiency alongside notable performance, the Sierra is making a strong technical statement in the competitive mid-size SUV segment.
The most eye-catching achievement is a certified fuel efficiency figure of 29.9 kpl. This remarkable milestone was recorded during a rigorous 12-hour endurance run at the controlled NATRAX track, earning the Sierra a place in the India Book of Records. The feat is credited to Tata’s new 1.5-litre ‘Hyperion’ turbo-petrol (TGDi) engine, which was paired with an automatic transmission for the test.
While real-world conditions will yield lower numbers, this record underscores the advanced efficiency potential of Tata’s latest powertrain technology.
This is not the Hyperion engine’s first headline-grabbing performance. In a separate high-speed test at the same facility, the Sierra propelled itself to a top speed of 222 kmph. This figure showcases the engine’s robust power output of 158 bhp and 26.06 kgm of torque, and highlights the SUV’s stable aerodynamic profile and secure high-speed manners under controlled conditions.
Launched at a starting price of ₹11.49 lakh (ex-showroom), the Tata Sierra revives an iconic nameplate with modern ambition. Beyond its distinctive retro-modern design and feature-rich cabin, these NATRAX records serve a strategic purpose. They actively reshape the perception of Tata’s engineering, moving the brand narrative firmly towards performance and refinement. By publicly testing and validating the Sierra’s efficiency and speed limits, Tata Motors is not just selling an SUV—it’s building a credentials-backed case for its new-generation technology.
The Sierra’s record-breaking runs affirm that it is more than a nostalgic design exercise. It is a vehicle engineered with a capable heart, one that promises both frugal daily commuting and confident highway performance, challenging rivals in the hotly contested space dominated by the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
