The new-generation Toyota Hilux has secured a maximum five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), reinforcing its position as one of the safest pick-ups currently on sale in Australia and New Zealand. The rating applies to all Hilux variants sold from November 2025 onward, except the Rugged X, which has yet to undergo assessment.

Tested under ANCAP’s more demanding 2025 protocols, the latest Hilux delivered consistently strong results across all four evaluation pillars. It scored 84 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 89 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 82 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 82 per cent for Safety Assist, placing it firmly among benchmark performers in the global pick-up segment.

What this means is that the Hilux’s fundamentals are doing most of the heavy lifting. ANCAP highlighted the vehicle’s robust structure and comprehensive restraint systems, including dual front airbags, side chest and curtain airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, and a centre airbag designed to reduce occupant injury in side impacts.

On the active safety front, the Hilux comes equipped with a wide suite of driver assistance technologies as standard. These include advanced autonomous emergency braking that detects vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, along with junction, crossing, and backover functions. Lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, and a speed assistance system with traffic sign recognition further bolster its crash-avoidance credentials.

While specifications can vary by market, including for India, the five-star ANCAP result underlines the depth of safety engineering built into Toyota’s global pick-up platform. In overseas markets, the Hilux continues to go head-to-head with rivals such as the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, and Mitsubishi Triton, where safety performance remains a key buying consideration alongside durability and capability.

For buyers prioritising occupant protection and advanced safety tech in a tough, work-ready package, the latest Hilux’s ANCAP rating sends a clear message: this is a pick-up that takes safety just as seriously as strength.
