In a landmark achievement for India’s automotive industry, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire has become the first sedan in the country to secure a 5-star safety rating under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP). The compact sedan, a best-seller in its segment, has set a new benchmark for safety, proving that affordability and top-tier crash protection can go hand in hand.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari presented the prestigious certification to Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, at a ceremony where the Baleno hatchback also earned a 4-star rating. This achievement is particularly significant as most top-rated vehicles under Bharat NCAP so far have been SUVs—making the Dzire’s feat a game-changer for sedans in India.

Built on Suzuki’s robust HEARTECT platform, the new Dzire impressed evaluators with its exceptional structural integrity and advanced safety tech, including:
The Dzire’s exceptional safety credentials stem from its comprehensive safety package, which includes six airbags (set to become standard across all variants by 2025), Electronic Stability Program (ESP+), hill-hold assist, ABS with EBD, and a 360-degree HD camera. These advanced features contributed to its outstanding performance in crash tests, where it achieved an impressive 29.46 out of 32 points for adult occupant protection and 41.57 out of 49 points for child occupant protection. These scores demonstrate the sedan’s robust protective capabilities for both front passengers and rear-seated children, making it one of the safest vehicles in its class.
Minister Gadkari lauded Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to safety, stating, “It gives me immense pride to see Made-in-India mass-market cars achieving top safety ratings. Maruti’s decision to make six airbags standard is a significant step toward safer roads.”
Takeuchi reaffirmed the brand’s focus on safety, announcing that ESP will be standard across all 18 Maruti models, with six airbags in every variant by 2025.
Long perceived as a budget-focused brand, Maruti has silenced critics with this achievement. The Dzire’s 5-star rating—alongside the Grand Vitara and Jimny’s strong safety performances—signals a strategic shift toward safer, more premium offerings. With rising safety awareness and stricter regulations, the Dzire’s top-rated crash protection makes it a compelling choice in the compact sedan segment. No longer just a fuel-efficient, value-for-money car, it now stands as one of the safest sedans in India.
Maruti Suzuki’s 5-star Dzire is a triumph for Indian car safety—proving that even mass-market models can achieve world-class protection. Will this push rivals to up their game? Only time will tell, but for now, the Dzire reigns supreme.
