Volkswagen has unveiled the latest iteration of its most powerful version of the Golf internationally today. The Golf R comes with added power and a whole lot of equipment. It’s powered by a 1,984cc, 4-cylinder, turbocharged TSI motor which produces 311 bhp and 42.85 kgm of torque. That engine comes mated to either a 7-speed DSG or 6-speed manual gearbox (UK and USA). It comes with VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system as standard and can do 0 – 100 kph in 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 250 kph.
Based on the latest eighth-generation Golf, the Golf R comes with a new front bumper featuring a splitter, R-specific air intake grilles and high-gloss black elements. It sits 2 cm lower than the standard Golf and comes with a neat little blue crossbar right above the radiator grille which doubles up as a DRL. The rear bumper gets a newly designed high-gloss black diffuser along with chrome-plated twin tailpipes and a roof spoiler. Other elements include chrome-plated twin tailpipes, exclusive side skirts, blue brake callipers and 19-inch alloy wheels.
On the inside, Volkswagen has made certain upgrades and changes to make the Golf R stand out in comparison to the standard Mk 8. There’s a customised ‘R’ display greet when starting up the touchscreen system and the digital instrument cluster. Other than that there are sport seats with Nappa leather, faux carbon fibre elements with blue accents in the side sections, as well as a blue R logo in the backrest. There’s an R button on the dash to select driving modes ((Comfort, Sport, Race and Individual) directly and blue contrast stitching to match the style all around the cabin. It is set to go on sale in the US during the latter part of 2021.
