The partnership between BMW and Rimac may have just been announced, but turns out, Rimac’s connection with BMW goes way deeper. In fact, it is safe to say that a BMW is the very reason for the existence of the electric supercar manufacturer; at the age of 20, Mate Rimac, Founder and CEO, Rimac Group, converted a 1984 BMW 3 Series into an EV.
BMW says this partnership with Rimac will see the latter transition into a high-volume components supplier. The aim of this partnership is to co-develop and produce high-voltage EV batteries for a select number of EV projects, which are yet to be revealed as of now. The Bavarian car maker is keen on this partnership, as it claims that battery-electric vehicles will account for over half of global vehicle sales. Interestingly, this announcement comes at a time when most manufacturers have backpedaled from their EV plans.
Rimac Technologies specializes in high-voltage battery packs, e-axles, as well as electronics and software solutions. The Rimac Campus in Croatia will see the establishment of sophisticated automated production lines for batteries, and a large part of the campus will be dedicated to this partnership. However, both parties will release more details about what form the strategic tie-up will take, as well as its scope and content, at a later stage.
