The first-generation Swift, initially showcased at the Paris Motor Show in 2004, underwent a significant transformation from Cultus-based models, focusing on a sportier design. It was then launched in India in 2005.
Supported by a robust marketing campaign the Swift exceeded sales forecasts in multiple markets, including Japan where it doubled initial projections.
Upon launch, it offered a range of engine options, including the 1.3-litre petrol engine from the Maruti Esteem and later the Fiat-sourced DDiS turbo-diesel engine, which went on to become India’s national engine. The Swift catered to varied preferences in the Indian market.
Adapting to BS-IV emission norms, Maruti upgraded the Swift’s engine to the more advanced 1.2-litre DOHC K12M engine in 2010.
With a focus on driving dynamics and safety, the Swift received accolades such as a four-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, and accolades like this contributed to its success in the Indian market, where consumers appreciated its blend of style and safety.
Since its launch in India in 2005, it swiftly captured the hearts of Indian consumers, establishing itself in the hatchback segment. It hit the one lakh unit mark in early 2007 and doubled to two lakh units a little over a year later. These milestones underscored Swift’s popularity and its significant contribution to shaping the Indian automotive landscape.
Maruti Suzuki Swift 2024
The 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift has been launched, generating widespread excitement across all age groups. With nearly three million units sold over its three generations, the new Swift continues to be a highly anticipated model.
Under the hood, the Swift is powered by a new 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, designed to balance performance and efficiency, which replaces the 1.2-litre four-cylinder mill. This engine delivers 81 bhp of power and 11.4 kgm of torque.
Retaining its design elements from the third generation, the new Swift features subtle updates such as a taller and narrower profile, refreshed exterior elements including a honeycomb-pattern grille, extended LED headlamps, and a revised front bumper.
Inside, the cabin receives premium enhancements with a ‘floating’ nine-inch infotainment touchscreen offering wireless connectivity features like Android Auto, Apple Carplay, and Suzuki Connect.
Safety features have also been upgraded, with six airbags, ISOFIX anchors, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, hill start assist, and ESC now standard across all variants.
Available with both manual and AMT gearboxes, it offers options for everyone to satisfy their requirements. Maruti, as always, has pulled off an amazing price, starting at INR ₹ 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
