Buying a car isn’t always about getting the most features, the biggest screen or the most comfortable rear seat. Sometimes, you just want something that makes you look forward to driving. A willing engine, a good gearbox, a responsive chassis and a bit of character can go a long way. Thankfully, the Indian market still has a few options for enthusiasts who don’t want to spend more than ₹20 lakh. Here are five cars we’d happily spend our money on.
- Volkswagen Virtus / Skoda Slavia
If you prefer a proper sedan, the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia are two of the best enthusiast-friendly options under ₹20 lakh. Both use the 1-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, producing 113 bhp and 178 Nm, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The 1-litre isn’t as punchy as the 1.5-litre TSI, but it’s willing, refined and makes for a rather enjoyable everyday drive. The Virtus has a slightly sportier character, while the Slavia feels a little more understated. Both offer an excellent ride, responsive steering feedback and a proper three-box silhouette. The manual versions are comfortably within budget, with prices starting at around ₹10 lakh, ex-showroom.
2. Hyundai i20 N Line
The i20 N Line is one of the few proper sporty hatchbacks you can buy in India today. It gets a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 118 bhp and 172 Nm, paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT. The manual is the one we’d pick, thanks to its engaging gearbox and sporty character. There’s also a sportier exhaust note, a revised suspension setup and sharper steering than the standard i20. It’s not a hardcore hot hatch, but it’s a rather entertaining daily driver that won’t break the bank. Prices start at around ₹9.27 lakh, ex-showroom.
2. Hyundai Venue N Line
If you like the i20 N Line’s recipe but want a little more ground clearance and SUV practicality, the Venue N Line is worth considering. It uses the same 1-litre turbo-petrol engine, producing 118 bhp and 172 Nm, and gets a six-speed manual or seven-speed DCT. The N Line treatment brings sportier styling, red accents, a more involving exhaust note and a suspension setup that’s tuned to feel more enthusiastic than the standard Venue. The manual N6 is the sweet spot here, with prices starting at around ₹10.66 lakh, ex-showroom.
4. Mahindra Thar OG
The Thar OG is for those who believe driving pleasure doesn’t have to end where the tarmac does. The three-door off-roader gets a choice of petrol and diesel engines, with the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol producing 160 bhp and 330 Nm, and the 2.2-litre diesel making 150 bhp and 330 Nm. Both are available with a six-speed manual and four-wheel-drive. There’s also the smaller 1.5-litre diesel for those who want a more affordable rear-wheel-drive option. The Thar isn’t the most practical or comfortable daily driver, but its ability to tackle challenging terrain makes it one of the most characterful cars you can buy. Prices start at ₹10.32 lakh, ex-showroom.
5. Hyundai Verna Turbo Manual
The Verna Turbo is perhaps the most underrated enthusiast car on this list. Its 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 158 bhp and 253Nm, and can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. It’s quick, has plenty of mid-range punch and offers a surprisingly engaging driving experience for a family sedan. The Verna also gets a well-equipped cabin, a spacious rear seat and a large boot, making it a sensible everyday car that can entertain when the road opens up. The turbo-manual variant is priced comfortably below ₹20 lakh, ex-showroom, making it a rather compelling all-rounder.
