There’s something appealing about a fast estate. You get all the practicality of a family car with enough performance to keep sports cars honest. ABT Sportsline knows this rather well. The German tuner has worked its magic on Audi’s latest RS5, creating the limited-run RS5-R with 709 bhp.
ABT has massaged the standard twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine, which gets electric assistance, with its ‘Power S’ software package increasing the V6’s output to 583 bhp, taking the combined system output to approximately 709 bhp. The engine itself now produces around 680 Nm, while total system torque climbs to roughly 904 Nm. ABT hasn’t released revised acceleration figures, so we’ll have to wait to see just how much quicker the RS5-R is compared to the standard car. What is known is that the top speed remains unchanged. Opt for Audi’s performance package and the RS5 can reach 280 kph.
The visual changes are just as substantial. ABT has given the RS5-R a new front spoiler, aerodynamic detailing around the front fenders, redesigned side skirts and carbonfibre mirror caps. There’s a choice of gloss or matte carbon finishes, while the more adventurous can opt for ABT’s ‘Carbon Camouflage’ treatment. At the back, the Avant gets a distinctive roof spoiler with integrated aerodynamic elements. It gives the estate a properly purposeful stance and, quite frankly, makes it look every bit as serious as its power figures suggest.
ABT plans to produce just 130 examples of the RS5-R across the sedan and Avant body styles. The conversion costs Rs 60 lakh for the sedan and Rs 65 lakh for the estate, excluding the price of the donor car. Additional expenses for installation, paintwork and the mandatory German TUV inspection will push the final bill higher. A fully equipped example could therefore cost more than Rs 1.8 crore. But ABT isn’t finished extracting performance from the RS5. A further upgrade is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027, bringing a titanium exhaust system developed with Akrapovič and another power increase. The target? Around 800 bhp. Pricing for this next stage hasn’t been announced yet.
For now, the RS5-R is an intriguing take on the modern performance estate. It combines the complexity of plug-in hybrid technology with the sort of power figures that would have seemed outrageous in an Audi wagon not too long ago. Practicality, plenty of carbonfibre and 709 horses — what’s not to like?
