Mercedes-Benz India has launched the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+, bringing plug-in hybrid tech to its performance sedan line-up. The new AMG combines a turbocharged straight-six petrol engine with an electric motor, making it one of the quickest and most technologically advanced E-Classes yet.

Power comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine, paired with an electric motor integrated into the nine-speed AMG transmission. The combined power output is 585 bhp, with 750 Nm of torque. Cars equipped with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package can briefly deliver up to 612 bhp in Race Start mode, and Mercedes claims a 0-100 kph time of 3.8 seconds. Unlike a conventional mild hybrid, the E 53 gets a 21.2 kWh battery that allows it to travel around 100 km on electric power. The electric motor also provides an instant torque boost during hard acceleration, helping deliver better performance while reducing fuel consumption during everyday driving.

The E 53 features AMG-specific suspension tuning, all-wheel drive, a wider front track, additional chassis bracing, adaptive suspension, rear-wheel steering and upgraded brakes. Mercedes says the braking and regenerative systems have also been calibrated to work seamlessly together.

Visually, the E 53 gets the signature AMG grille with vertical slats, more aggressive bumpers, wider front fenders and larger alloy wheels. Inside, you get AMG sports seats, the latest MBUX infotainment system with AMG-specific displays, a performance steering wheel and the kind of sporty luxury you would expect from a car like this.

The new E 53 represents a significant shift for AMG. Rather than downsizing, Mercedes has retained the characterful straight-six and paired it with plug-in hybrid technology. On paper, it promises the pace expected of an AMG while offering enough electric range to cover most daily commutes without using petrol. Whether it delivers the emotional appeal of AMGs past is something we’ll find out once we get behind the wheel.

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ is priced at ₹1.45 crore, ex-showroom.
