Triumph has launched a new, more rugged avatar of its Scrambler 400X in the form of a new XC variant. Priced at Rs 2.94 lakh (ex-showroom), the new trim is Rs 27,000 more expensive than the standard version. And there’s a lot on offer to justify that bump.

And most of the changes are obvious, aren’t they? To add more off-road cred, the 400XC flaunts the same 19/17-inch wheel setup as before, but now with tubeless wire-spoke rims instead of alloy wheels. Furthermore, there’s a compact engine guard and an aluminium sump guard to protect the mechanically-unchanged 399cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. Lastly, there are new paint jobs that complement the flyscreen and the front fender.

While the changes do enhance the visual appeal of the Scrambler 400, the ‘XC’ tag doesn’t bring any updates to the suspension setup, brakes or the seat. In fact, even the MRF Zapper Kurve tyres are shared with the standard model. Perhaps an XE variant with more serious hardware could do the trick?
