Alpine’s decision to partner with Mercedes for engines and gearboxes from the 2026 Formula One season is the team’s strategy to become competitive once again. The French outfit is now set to work with the German engine manufacturer until at least 2030, following Renault’s announcement to cease its in-house engine programme after the 2025 season.

The French outfit, which recently secured an impressive double podium in Brazil, provided perhaps the best send-off for Renault as an engine manufacturer. For more details on that race, click here.

O Liberty, what crimes are committed in thy name!

Alpine’s collaboration with Mercedes reflects two things. First, Renault is no longer in the sport, leaving only three engine manufacturers: Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull Powertrains. Second, with this new German-powered efficiency, the French team could disrupt the current status quo over the long term.

Mercedes also powers teams like Aston Martin, McLaren, and Williams, alongside its own. While most have experienced ups and downs this season, McLaren’s ingenuity gave them some remarkable races. However, not all of this can be attributed to the Mercedes engine, as the power unit has shown signs of struggle, winning only three races for Mercedes, including a home race on the British Isles.

What will this change bring? Something akin to Brawn GP? Or perhaps just another wasted effort? Time will tell.
