Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, has offered a first glimpse of the next-generation Compass SUV, set to make its global debut in 2025. This new model will mark the third generation of the Compass, following the current version, which has been available in India since 2017, with a facelift introduced in 2021.
The teaser image provides a side profile view of the upcoming Compass, revealing a more angular design while maintaining some signature Jeep elements.
The flat hood and roof, which gently slopes toward the rear, give the SUV a muscular and robust appearance. The wheel arches are accentuated with bold flares and additional cladding, contributing to the ruggedness. A prominent character line runs from the front of the vehicle to the rear, tapering down just past the back door. The floating roof effect, created by blacked-out D-pillars and quarter glass, adds a modern touch, while the horizontally positioned tail lamps and short rear overhang create a compact yet dynamic look.
The next-generation Compass will be the first Jeep model to sit on the STLA M platform, which is shared with other SUVs such as the Peugeot 3008, 5008, and Opel Grandland. The platform is designed to accommodate a variety of powertrains, including internal combustion engines (ICE), mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric options.
In addition to its updated design, Jeep has confirmed that the new Compass will offer four-wheel drive and a range of multi-energy propulsion systems. This flexibility will likely attract a wider range of customers, with options that cater to both traditional fuel users and those interested in electrified powertrains.
Despite the global excitement, India will not see the next-gen Compass anytime soon. Stellantis had initially planned to launch the new Compass in India by 2026 under the project codename J4U. However, the high costs associated with adapting the STLA M platform for the Indian market, coupled with low projected sales volumes, led to the cancellation of this plan. Even attempts to increase production by manufacturing Peugeot SUVs in India for export to Malaysia couldn’t meet the necessary volume targets.
With no immediate replacement in the pipeline for India, Jeep will continue offering the current-generation Compass, which has been on the market since 2017. The SUV received a significant update in 2021 and will continue to be powered by the existing diesel engine until at least 2026. Looking further ahead, Jeep is expected to launch a new SUV based on a Citroën platform by 2027.
This means that for now, the current-gen Compass will remain a key part of Jeep’s lineup in India, providing continuity while the brand explores new models for the future.
