From the August 1, Karnataka Police will begin booking drivers who exceed a speed limit of 130 kph on any road in the state. Any such speed infraction will leave you with an FIR on the spot and if convicted, can land you with a minimum six-month imprisonment with a fine! This comes bundled with a spot arrest.

Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Police has stated that speeding is responsible for 90 percent of fatal accidents in Karnataka. The state ranks second only to Chandigarh in road accident fatalities, according to police data.
The police initiative follows data indicating that, on July 25, 155 motorists were recorded driving over 130 kph on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway.
In response to queries about whether the rule applies to ministerial convoys, Kumar referred to an incident a year ago when the Chief Minister travelled to Mandya and ensured his convoy did not exceed 100 kph. He highlighted that officers are responsible for briefing their superiors on speed limits.
Between April 2023 and March 2024, Karnataka recorded 43,780 road accidents, resulting in 11,611 deaths and 51,207 injuries. Police data presented to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah revealed that 63 percent of these accidents occurred on 14 national highways and 114 state highways.
